Masks Inside and Out

With Steve Jarand

The deadline for this opportunity has passed.

We all hide behind different versions of ourselves. The roles we play are temporary masks we wear. These masks help us navigate through our lives, yet revealing what lies underneath may feel too personal. But if we wear a real mask and play the game of disguise, honest expression turns our self-consciousness into an adventure. Showing something genuine from inside feels like a universal truth. It is a joy for us, and a gift to the audience.

In this workshop, we’ll approach the actor’s endeavour with detachment and selflessness. Masks and mask exercises will help train feeling rather than thinking, instinct over planning and reacting instead of the on-going chore of acting.

Feel what it’s like to play on stage free from self-judgement and self-consciousness. Let the masks play with you and feel the release inside and out.

Instructor Bio: Steve Jarand

Steve has been a member of Loose Moose Theatre Company since 1987. When not improvising and playing masks, he performs nature theatre in schools, mountain parks, museums and zoos. Beginning in 1998, Steve established the Loose Moose Mask Group and has been teaching and performing with masks ever since.

Each year the Trancemask tour of Europe gets broader in scope. Advanced student courses are now held in half and full mask. Masks are popping up regularly in Impro shows and prepared mask pieces are also performed.

In 2016, Steve completed a six month round the world trip with the masks teaching and performing in Columbia, Peru, Brazil, New Zealand, Hong Kong and Japan. Last year the masks showed up in Turkey and Israel as well, and this year they were off to Romania.
