The Leighton Art Centre has a rich history as a place for creative expression and artistic endeavour. Situated on 80 rural acres of magnificent foothills landscape, just 15 km southwest of Calgary, the Leighton Art Centre features the historic home of renowned artist and architect A.C. Leighton and his wife Barbara, an accomplished artist in her own right. The Leighton Art Centre exists to keep the legacy of the Leighton’s alive by creating the resources to offer exceptional experiences to see, learn and create art.

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Exhibitions, Museums and Programming, the Museum & Gallery Assistant is an integral member of the Leighton Art Centre Team and is responsible for assisting the Museum Director with several projects involving the museum’s collection, records management and exhibitions. The candidate should have a background in Museum Studies, Fine Art and/or Art History.

The Leighton Art Centre is in a rural area and there is no public transportation; a reliable vehicle is a must.

This is a full-time, temporary contract, May 12, 2018, through August 26, 2018. Working hours will be Wednesday through Sunday, 9:00am to 5:00pm.

Pay: Hourly wage is $16 and is funded as part of the Young Canada Works program.

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be registered in the Young Canada Works Inventory at young-canada-works.canada.ca.
  • Have been a full-time student in the semester preceding the YCW job and intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
  • Be between the ages of 16 and 30.
  • Be a Canadian student, legally entitled to study and work in Canada.
  • Be willing to commit to a work term of at least 16 weeks.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Complete collections management projects, including an inventory of the extensive Leighton Art Centre collection. This includes undertaking condition reports and preventative conservation practices and maintaining an up to date collections database.
  • Work on an ongoing records management project in accordance with the LAC Records Management Policy. This includes going through boxes of accumulated institutional records, digitizing and archiving relevant information.
  • Assist with day-to-day museum operations including opening and closing Museum, Gallery and Gift Shop and occasionally staffing the gallery shop.
  • Assist with special events such as openings and art festivals, including preparations, set up, take down and staffing the event.
  • Act as a team member and a team player, assisting with cleaning, answering phones, hosting tours and customer service.

Note: Special projects may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Have a background and interest in museum studies, art history, fine art and/or art history.
  • Take initiative and resolve problems independently when reasonable.
  • Be able to pay close attention to detail and complete repetitive tasks accurately.
  • Work cooperatively, as part of a team.
  • Have proficiency with computers, social media, website updating and Microsoft programs.
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Possess reliable transportation (due to our rural location, this is a must).

Holding a valid first aid certification will be considered an asset.
