The New Gallery (TNG) is committed to providing opportunities and venues for artists that foster social and political creative practices while engaging and educating audiences through contemporary art. TNG’s +15 Window is located on Treaty 7 in the Arts Commons building (205 8th Ave. SE) on a high-traffic pedestrian walkway.

The +15 Window is a shallow vitrine best suited for small-scale installations and/or displays. The +15 Window is surrounded by similar spaces programmed by Calgary’s other artist-run centres and visual arts organizations (TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary, Stride Gallery, Untitled Art Society, Alberta Printmakers, the Marion Nicoll Gallery, the University of Calgary Faculty of Arts, and Alberta Craft Council).

The +15 Window provides a unique exhibition platform capable of engaging Calgary’s diverse downtown audience as well as the local artistic community. This venue is viewed by thousands of passersby daily and has a broad audience that can include, among others: commuters, children, homeless populations, bureaucrats, artists, and cultural workers.

Applicants should familiarize themselves with this unusual space prior to submitting. TNG is most interested in proposals aligned with the organization’s mandate that also make specific use of the venue’s highly-public location in Calgary’s core.

Exhibiting artists are offered a fee of $461 to show their work (commensurate with 2018 CARFAC Fee Schedule – A.1.6), and a modest budget for shipping or production costs, negotiated on a case-by-case basis. All exhibitions are eight weeks in duration.

Submission Procedures

The following materials should be included in your application:

• Proposal – Briefly describe your +15 Window exhibition. Provide complete details of your spatial, physical, and material requirements, including any special equipment and/or technical needs.
• Artist Statement – Discuss how your proposed project is situated in relation to your current artistic practice and the broader context of your work, research, and interests. Please note that congruity with TNG’s mandate is a major consideration during the selection process. You can find TNG’s mandate by visiting thenewgallery.org.
• Curriculum Vitae – Describe your artistic background to a maximum length of three pages. Please include all relevant contact information and a personal website, if applicable.
• Support – Please include up to fifteen pieces of support material, including digital images, videos, or audio clips alongside a corresponding numbered image list detailing the artwork’s title, medium, physical size, date of completion, and any other necessary descriptors. TNG’s peer jury will review up to a maximum of five minutes of time-based work.

TNG only accepts digital submissions via e-mail. Please format the proposal, artist statement, image list and CV as a single PDF document. Images must be numbered JPG files with a maximum resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels at 72 DPI and no larger than 1 MB in size. TNG accepts links to video and audio work hosted online. E-mailed applications must be submitted in a single .zip folder containing the PDF and any image files.
