Pianist/Assistant Choir Director

Collaborative Pianist/Assistant Choir Director Needed – Contract Position

The Youth Singers Kids & Music Program is seeking a dynamic, energetic, talented, and empathetic musician to accompany our Grade 2 program. This position has the potential to expand into a teaching role as well, for the right candidate.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of Grade 10 RCM piano achieved.
  • Excellent sight reader.
  • Comfortable with or interested in exploring musical improvisation on the piano.
  • Ability to ‘go with the flow’.
  • Interested in working with young children, and most importantly, likes young children.
  • Comfortable singing and can model singing well—including harmonies.
  • Some choral directing or an interest in choral directing an asset.

Duties:

  • Attend all rehearsals, workshops and concerts for the Grade 2 Kids & Music class.
  • Support the choir/rehearsals with excellent musicality, and model good professional behaviour at all times.
  • Support all four Kids & Music Groups (Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2) in our Christmas and year-end recitals.
  • Prep all music that has been given ahead of time, and be ready to play any last minute requests as well as possible.
  • Have a general knowledge of the vocal as well as the piano music assigned, so they may support the children by singing as directed.
  • Be pleasant, kind, gentle, and caring around children.
  • Work well with a dynamic and energetic choral director/instructor.
  • Understand that working with children means every lesson is a new adventure.
  • Have as much fun as possible in every lesson.
  • Be prepared to substitute teach a class should the director be ill or absent.
  • BONUS: If you are interested in subbing for any of the other Kids & Music classes, this position has the potential to expand into a secondary instructor for the program as it grows, if you are the right candidate and have an interest in pursuing music education for young children.

Contract Commitment:

Weekly Class Time: Wednesdays, 5:30-6:30pm. Classes run from September 12, 2018 to April 24, 2019.

*NO Class Dec 12 to Jan 2 (Christmas Break)
*NO Class Feb 13 (Family Day/Teachers Convention Break)
*NO Class March 27 (Spring Break)

Christmas Presentations: December 4 (4:30pm – 45 mins) and December 5 (4:30 – 7:30pm), 2018
Choreo Workshops: February 9, March 9, April 13, 2019, 1:30 – 3:30pm
Year End Presentation: April 27, 2019, 1:00 – 4:30pm

All rehearsals take place at PAYC (1371 Hastings Cres. SE).

Youth Singers of Calgary pays $35/hour for this position.

About the Kids & Music Director

Naomi Williams believes everyone has a voice that deserves to be heard. She is passionate about helping others on their path towards vocal confidence, health, strength and beauty. Naomi teaches beginner to advanced singers of all ages, and is skilled at adapting her teaching style to her student, their level of ability, and the music they want to learn.

Naomi understands the career paths of singers in the classical/opera world, commercial music, and musical theatre. She uses her knowledge and networks to help guide her students towards their personal vocal goals. If her students choose to participate in recitals, festivals, exams, auditions, or an open mic they are well-supported, ensuring that the experience is positive and successful. When she isn’t teaching at her studio, AvidDiva Music, she is working with very young children as the Youth Singers of Calgary’s Kids & Music Director, or singing with her cover band, FortyFive.
