The Freed Artist Society (ReFreshed)

The Freed Artist Society serves vulnerable youth in Calgary and Treaty 7 First Nations communities through resiliency based arts (Hip-Hop/Urban Arts) programs and projects. ReFreshed started as basic workshops for youth outreach and has progressed into a diverse organization that provides opportunities for youth through positive life skills, cultural re-integration, experience, mentoring, skill building, and community engagement.

ReFreshed supports Indigenous and vulnerable youth in achieving their full potential through liberation based Hip-Hop, arts and culture initiatives and a community of empowerment. Our vision is to see youth walking in health, purpose and responsibility; overcoming obstacles, achieving life goals and opportunities for success.

Job Summary

Oversees the coordination and administration of all aspects of an ongoing program including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling program activities. Program Coordinator, will oversee team building, safety protocols and is the bridge between Executive Director, Community Coordinator and the program in general. This includes maintaining the engagement of frontline staff, cooks, food being on time, artist educators and staff attendance, who is running what and when back up plans if folks are not able to make it and check-ins with staff and debriefing. Experience in the arts and arts facilitation is appreciated but not required.

Hours: 40 hrs/week, various—must have a flexible schedule to accommodate a variety of shifts between 8:00am to 9:00pm, seven days per week

This Position will (responsibilities and duties):

  • Areas of Authority: Under the authority of the Executive Director, the Program Coordinator assumes the responsibility for the implementation and development of ReFreshed’s programs with a focus on community engagement and organizational support.
  • This includes:
    • Supporting the Executive Director in organizational objectives and growth through administration and macro-level planning, including; program development, team development, reporting, fundraising, grant work, strategic planning, program and team management, partnership development.
    • Communications, media, and public relations support.
    • Planning and implementing new program strategies and evaluation based on program results and objectives.
    • Participates in networking and community relations on behalf of ReFreshed and the program.
    • Identifies potential partnerships, community events and community initiatives that parallel the mission, vision and values of ReFreshed and would complement the program.
    • Helps to create and implement the ReFreshed communication plan that informs the community of the activities and direction of the program.
  • Staff support and management will include:
    • Youth workers, artist educators and volunteers before, during, and after the program. Ensuring quality of program delivery as they are following through with the protocols, training, police checks, and showing up on time.
    • Organizing back up facilitators for the program if nobody is able to run a program or an art workshop.
    • Helping to facilitate the smooth running of the program and stepping in when necessary.
    • Running and leading debriefs.
    • Engaging elders, community members, schools, families and wellness centres.
    • They attend community events, meetings and ceremonies.
    • They are also responsible for creating plans and executing recruitment of participants, Elders, community members, parents and cultural liaisons.
    • Organize and create meetings/events for community engagement.
    • It is their role to set up ways to engage parents in the program. This can be done through open house events, monthly parent meetings, phone calls home to update and keep parents in the loop.
    • Reporting and documentation, this includes attendance, weekly reporting, youth behaviours and participation for funders and stakeholders. As well as inputting month-end numbers and feedback.
    • Resource development, working alongside community liaison to create resources available in the community for emergencies, basic needs and mental health supports.

Minimum Qualification Requirements: Police Vulnerable Sector Check, Family Intervention Check, Standard First Aid/CPR Certificate; Valid Class 5 Driver’s License, and your own vehicle.

Education: Formal education in social services or health (i.e. social work, psychology, mental health, disability services work, addictions,) or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience/Abilities:

  • Applicants are required to have a minimum of two years relevant work experience and must have strong leadership, communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Must be a strong advocate for youth who affected by poverty, social marginalization, and mental/emotional health challenges.
  • Applicants are highly motivated and proficient in: leading team innovation, use of technology, harm reduction services, and facilitation of healthy lifestyles.
  • Self-lead and motivated as ReFreshed is a grass-roots startup initiative.
