Detailed Schedule

Day 1
Lunch and snacks will be provided.

The first day of the workshop provides a learning environment and social group experience for relation making and finding common ground, starting with the social position you occupy. Together we will seek to deepen our understandings of contextual racism and settler-colonialism in its present form through an exploration of family ancestry and ancestral experiences.

The burden of racism and colonialism is carried differently in individuals, but we all respond to a colonial system that often goes unnamed. Workshop facilitator Jin-Sun Yoon will provide exercises that will help the group to experientially embody and name what it is like to carry these experiences. From there, we will consider what it means to be in solidarity and to collectively heal from colonial violence and trauma. These conversations will help us to create relationships in the spirit of allyship and anti-racism.

Jin-me Yoon will give a short presentation on her artistic project to inform and welcome those who wish to participate in day 2.

Day 2
Heritage Day. Participation in Day 2 is voluntary and includes an honorarium. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

On Heritage Day, interested workshop participants have the opportunity to work with Jin-me Yoon in the production of her new video artwork. Participants do not have to prepare in advance and the video does not involve any dialogue.

Participants will be asked to carry out a series of simple actions at the site. Such action, for example, may include: looking for a piece of rubble, carrying a small piece of rubble and placing it in a pile, then passing it around with the group. Such simple gestures are performed in front of a camera, in a group context, using both a conventional camera and a 360 camera. More gestures will be devised by Jin-me Yoon and included once she has experienced the workshop, alongside the participants.

Day 3
Generative sharing forum, prep time, for installing work, 12:00 to 2:30pm, followed by group dinner.

Participants are welcome to present work inspired (loose and in formation) by Day 1 or Day 2, or an artwork they were developing previously, related to the topics explored in the workshop with Jin-Sun Yoon.

Generative emergence (of artworks and communities in the making) will be the focus of our discussion rather than individualized formal critiques. Parameters are no more than 10 min. long (if performance, video, sound /audio etc.) and no more than 10 participants to present their work. Collaborations are encouraged.

Though all participants from the workshop are welcome to attend the generative sharing forum, the first 10 participants to contact organizers identifying their interest in presenting will do so. All works must be portable, performance-related work that requires no specialized technical equipment is encouraged, but if you do require equipment, you must bring this yourself or contact the organizers in advance. As a group, we will be present and attentive. A spirit of informality, experimentation, and generosity will guide this sharing of presentations. Jin-me Yoon will be present as a mentor to facilitate and offer her comments alongside the other participants.

“Can another form of sociality be brought forth that is not based on the adversarial, an alternative way of being that is less prone to othering?” – Jin-me Yoon M:ST Relaxing into Relation Workshop October 2018

Jin-me Yoon is a Korean born Canadian artist. She lives and works on the unceded and occupied territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. Since 1992, she has been teaching in the visual art program at the School for the Contemporary Arts, Simon Fraser University.

Since the early 1990s Yoon’s lens-based practice in photography, video, and installation has reexamined questions concerning history, place, and identity and the body supported by an underlying interest in how these very questions are based on entangled and interdependent relations. She has exhibited and presented her work extensively both nationally and internationally.

Jin-Sun Yoon is an expert in facilitating workshops which seek to stop mental colonization both within Indigenous communities and interculturally. Her workshops and courses provide a safe space for groups to engage in dialogue about this very sensitive topic. Participants are empowered to make healthy choices, create a network of support, and have a voice that can influence sustainable change through relationships. Decolonizing methodologies are employed throughout her workshops and serve to model different ways of being together.

This workshop is presented by Mountain Standard Time and TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary.
