For three months, participants will work with Banff Centre’s Scenic Carpentry team on all Banff Centre productions, co-commissions, presentations, external commissions, conferences, and outreach programs.

Responsibilities include interpreting and generating technical information from drafting, material handling, safe operation and maintenance of Scenic Shop equipment, implementing a build plan, participation in the efficient construction of stage scenery, as well as loading productions in and out.

Participants will have an opportunity to learn and use a wide variety of building techniques as well as wood and metal tools in our large and fully outfitted shop.

What does the Program Offer?

The practicum program is centered on learning and bolstering the core skills required to be a scenic carpenter. As an integral part of the Banff Centre’s training process, practicum participants will experience one-on-one mentorship and coaching from our experienced professional staff who will guide them through production processes and building techniques.

Materials used may include wood, metal, composites, plastics, and foams. Methods of scenery movement include flies, winches, pneumatics, and electric motors.

Much of the training material is show-driven, although the Scenic Carpentry department offers in-house and guest presenters who will deliver specialized workshops, training, and off-site tours. There will also be opportunities for self-guided projects.

Who Should Apply?

Ideal applicants will have completed formal theatre technical training in an accredited institution or have equivalent work experience. They will be able to demonstrate strong organizational aptitude, flexibility, lift 50 lbs, and have an interest in live performance technologies.

Basic safety equipment will be provided. Applicants should be able to work with wood and metal without any adverse reaction and provide their own CSA approved steel toed footwear, appropriate shop clothes (no holes, tears, or fraying), and eye protection (if prescription eyewear is required).
