The Leighton Art Centre has a rich history as a place for creative expression and artistic endeavour. Situated on 80 rural acres of magnificent foothills landscape just 15 km southwest of Calgary, the Leighton Art Centre features the historic home of renowned artist and architect A.C. Leighton and his wife Barbara, an accomplished artist in her own right, along with a historic education centre. For over 40 years, summer camps at Leighton Art Centre have provided children with exceptional art and nature experiences and life-long memories. Hours: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week, overtime as required Terms of Employment: June 4 – August 31, 2018 (possibility for some hours during May, as needed) Compensation: $17.00 per hour This position is part of the Canada Summer Jobs program. It is open to students, 18 to 30 years of age who are enrolled and returning to school on a full-time basis for the following academic year. Key Responsibilities Manage day-to-day running of summer camp activities and staff at the Leighton Art Centre Summer Camp. The Summer Camp Coordinator will report directly to the Education Director with the expectation of daily check-ins via email or phone call. Role and Responsibilities: Manage summer camp counsellors to ensure they are completing their job in accordance with the summer camp curriculum set out by the Education Director. Mentor summer camp counsellors in order to help them develop the skills and expertise necessary to guide their camp groups. This may include instructing counsellors on presentation of lessons, classroom management, behaviour management, etc. Prepare materials needed daily for lessons. Plan and prepare Friday art show. Provide support to counsellors to deal with any camper behaviour, illness, or personal issues. Instruct summer camp in the event of counsellor illness or absence. Manage summer camp volunteers (junior volunteers) to ensure they are assisting counsellors and are demonstrating appropriate camp conduct. Maintain open and timely communication with Education Director to report any incidents, concerns about staff or campers, parent concerns, etc. Manage supply list and inform Education Director when materials need to be purchased. Prepare week plans for counsellors and ensure counsellors have adequate support to follow plans. Meet weekly with the Education Director to review registrations for upcoming camp weeks. Qualifications and Competencies: Experience working with children six to 14 years old is highly recommended. will be considered an asset. A passion for art and creativity. Studies in art, education and other related fields Experience managing staff will be considered an asset. Willingness to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to follow directions and work cooperatively with Education Centre staff. Reliable and proactive. Excellent communication skills. Valid First Aid certification is an asset.
