Summer Programs Assistant

Located in Calgary, Alberta, TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary is a non-profit artist-run centre dedicated to the development and public presentation of contemporary art.

Our goal is to incite dialogue locally, which contributes to the global critical discourse on contemporary art.

The Summer Programs Assistant contributes to the research, development, and implementation of TRUCK’s public programs during the summer months, with a focus on the delivery of TRUCK’S outreach activities through our CAMPER (Contemporary Art Mobile Public Exhibition Rig) program. CAMPER acts as a vehicle for outreach and offsite programming, exploring the intersections of land, public space, and artistic practice in an inclusive, participation-oriented manner that fosters public engagement and appreciation of contemporary art practices.

Tasks include liaising with participating artists and partner organizations, assisting with the development of a schedule of dates and communication strategy, assisting with budget and resource development, and providing support during the presentation of summer programs.

This position also assists in day-to-day gallery operations including: exhibition facilitation, installation, promotion of events, and communication with gallery visitors, participating artists, and the media.

Qualifications

Applicants must currently be in a Bachelors’ Degree program or equivalent in the Visual Arts or Arts Administration with a strong understanding of contemporary art, art history, and artist-run culture. Applicants must be comfortable and confident working with artists, the public, and have a keen interest in bringing art to the public through arts education.

Skills required for this position include excellent writing and speaking skills, research and organizational skills, the ability to work individually or as part of a team, a working knowledge of electronic distribution networks, and basic knowledge of Macintosh software. A driver’s license will be considered an asset. The successful candidate will
have a flexible schedule as the position will require some evening and weekend hours.

This position is subject to the availability of funding through Canada Summer Jobs Employment Program.

Eligible applicants must be:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment.
  • Have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year.
  • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment.
  • Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

This position is for 30 hours per week for eight weeks commencing May 29, 2018.

The rate of pay is $16 per hour.
