Talk Like a Brit

This workshop will teach you how to do a British Stage Standard Dialect or Received Pronunciation (RP) that is integrated into character and the oral geography of the sound, and not just mimicry. We will look at the RP as well as how dialects move around the various regions in southern England.

Knowing how you move from your own sound into the dialect of the character will also help you to adopt other dialects and accents for other regions. you will learn and how and why we sound differently, depending on where you are from!

When: September 22, 2018, 11:00am – 5:00pm

Where: Morpheus Rehearsal Centre (Lower Level, 3512 5th Ave. NW)

Refreshments will be served from 10:30 and 11:00am so feel to come early and settle in.

Jane MacFarlane is a voice, speech dialect, and text coach, actor, and director. She has taught Voice for the Actor, including speech and dialect, and acting at such institutions as York University, Harvard University, Southern Methodist University, Mount Royal University, UCalgary and UAlberta. She is the Resident Voice Coach for Theatre Calgary, where she has worked on 45+ productions since 2000, including The Secret Garden, Twelfth Night, The Audience, Skylight, 1000 Splendid Sons, The Crucible, 15 seasons of A Christmas Carol and seven seasons on Shakespeare by the Bow. She is also the Voice & Dialect Consultant for Vertigo Theatre and the voice and text Coach for The Shakespeare Company.
