Technical Assistant

The Calgary International Film Festival’s mission is to entertain and engage audiences by curating the most innovative and compelling films and creating remarkable festival experiences.

The festival is a 12-day showcase of up to 200 multi-genre films from Canada and over 40 other countries, hosting gala events, screenings, award ceremonies and special presentations. Additionally, the festival co-presents other programs, such as Doc Soup, throughout the year.

Role

The Technical Assistant reports to the Technical Manager and assists in the delivery and execution of all of the festival’s audio-visual tech, both on- and off-screen.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Assist Technical Manager in planning and executing all festival tech, including source, rent, install, and return all equipment.
  • Support the Technical Manager in tracking all technical equipment, budgets and schedules for off-screen equipment.
  • Work closely with the Logistics Coordinator to ensure the effective delivery and set-up of tech materials.
  • Work with the Artistic Director and the Marketing Director to plan equipment requirements for Festivalscape activity.
  • Determine and execute technical needs regarding all Festivalscape programming inside or outside the cinemas.
  • Work with the Behind the Screen Programmer to plan equipment requirements for Behind the Screen events, including events both inside and outside cinemas.
  • Set up for and execute Behind the Screen events.
  • Coordinate and lead teams of Tech and Mover Crew volunteers.
  • Assist with Projectionist duties as required.
  • Assistant stage manage or run technical aspects of galas and special events as required.
  • Provide detailed post-mortem notes and archived files (hard and electronic) relevant to the position and the work accomplished following the festival.

Qualifications:

  • Outstanding collaborator and team player.
  • Strong organization and attention to detail.
  • The ability to work calmly and excel under tight deadlines.
  • Professional experience in live events.
  • Excellent working knowledge of A/V and lighting equipment including PA systems, mixers, microphones, DJ gear, lights, etc.
  • Ability to participate ‘hands-on’ in setups and strikes, such as lifting and pushing objects of up to 50 lbs.
  • Knowledge of film and digital video formats.
  • Knowledge of film and video presentation equipment (decks, projectors, DCP servers, etc.) is an asset.
  • Stage management experience is an asset.
  • Strong sense of professionalism.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Proactive and effective problem solver.
  • Strong computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experience with databases, and the ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Proficient in the use of simple hand tools (e.g. wrench, screwdrivers, drills, etc.).
  • First Aid training is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license, able to provide a clean driver’s abstract, and qualified to drive a rental vehicle, is an asset.

Employment Type: Fixed Term Contract
Start Date: Starts August 16, 2018, ends October 15, 2018

Hours: Varying throughout the contract. An estimated average of 12 hours per week in August; 28 hours per week in the first half of September, and full time and above during the festival (September 19 to 30, 2018), which includes long days, evenings and weekends on-site; concluding with 14 hours per week for the remainder of the contract. Involves evenings and weekends, especially during the festival.

Salary/Fee: $4,950 flat for the contract
