The Puppet Creative Fund

The Canadian Academy of Mask and Puppetry (CAMP) is ecstatic to revive The Creative Fund seeking to assist puppet makers in the development and creation of new tiny-puppet works.

These works will be developed over five months and then premiered during the 2021 Festival of Animated Objects as part of the WunderBriefs series.

This opportunity is seeking to inspire works that are focused on being compactable, alternative and portable—they are mini puppet interactions or shows that are flexible enough to pop up in corners, hallways, sidewalks, lobbies, and basements. All types of applicants are welcome to apply from across art forms, backgrounds, identities, ages, experience ranges, or abilities— CAMP is committed to equity and diversity and encourages applications from all individuals. We welcome projects from across all genres ranging from fairytale to revolt—encouraging participants to explore new puppetry terrains!

Ideas can be created out of suitcases, old radios, wagons—they could sit on your knee or wander in front of you. Concepts can be inspired around a variety of different audience interactions ranging from, one on one experiences or with small gatherings—the important part, is portable!

What CAMP will Provide

We will be accepting six interested puppeteers and will be providing each person with $1,000 to build their concept. Each participant will also have access to CAMP’s workshop studio at Contemporary Calgary and the support of CAMP staff for creative idea development and puppet troubleshooting needs.

All projects will be scheduled and performed multiple times during the Festival Of Animated Objects (March 9 to 14, 2021) with an additional $150 performance fee and an all-access festival pass.
