About Vertigo Theatre

Vertigo Theatre has entertained audiences for over 42 years. We are located at the base of the Calgary Tower, which is home to our administration and ticket offices as well as our two performance venues. We program the BD&P Mystery Theatre Series and are also home to a variety of arts organizations that rent our performance venues throughout the season. Our diverse audience includes young adults to urban professionals and seniors.

About the Position

Vertigo Theatre seeks an individual for the position of apprentice technical director. Reporting to the technical director, rentals manager and production and facility manager, the apprentice technical director will be exposed to all technical areas involved in producing a professional production.

The experience will be highly varied and can include everything from participating in lighting hangs, sound install, set install, props building/sourcing, rigging, paint, special effects, wardrobe and facility maintenance.

The successful candidate will be a highly-motivated individual who has a keen interest in developing their skills in theatrical production. This position would be well suited to a recent graduate of theatre school or someone with a technical or production background in community or independent theatre. Familiarity with Vectorworks and with theatrical lighting or sound systems would be an asset.

The apprentice technical director is a core member of the Vertigo production department and, as such, will uphold and promote Vertigo’s values of excellence, mentorship, collaboration, advocacy, accessibility, and accountability.

Additional Skills and Requirements:

  • Comfortable working at heights.
  • Able to lift 50lbs.
  • Clean driver’s abstract.
  • Familiar and comfortable using power tools.
  • Ability to take direction and work independently.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Hours: 40 to 44 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with some evenings and weekends required.
Dates: August 19 2019 to June 14, 2020, with possible extension to June 28, 2020.
Compensation: $700 per week plus 4% vacation pay based on a 44-hour workweek. Some evenings and weekends required.
