Glenbow is one of Canada’s leading museums with an extraordinary breadth of collections, including the largest visual arts collection in western Canada.

We have one of the country’s foremost Indigenous collections and engagement programs, and core strengths in Africa, Asia, folk art, Western settler culture, and a library and archival collection focused on the visual arts. Glenbow offers the promise of new stories, new dialogues, and new directions in service of an emboldened civic society.

Glenbow is now renovating its 1975 building in the heart of downtown Calgary. This project will provide the museum’s team the opportunity to reconsider the use of over 300,000 square feet of space, and to reimagine its entire public-facing operation, including all exhibitions and use of collections, and how they will activate communities and demonstrate relevance to a diverse city while further defining its mandate as an art museum. Key to this redevelopment will be innovation, social entrepreneurship and new business models enabling Glenbow to serve as a new model in financial sustainability for the Canadian culture sector. The museum is scheduled to reopen its building and relaunch a fully refreshed program and operation in 2024.

Glenbow seeks an entrepreneurial business strategist for the position of vice president, strategy and chief financial officer to lead an exciting and broad portfolio that includes capital planning, business development, investment management, finance, governance, insurance and legal matters. This role will also function as a key facilitator in support of the $115 million renovation and larger capital campaign.

Serving as the chief financial officer, corporate secretary, as well as a chief advisor to the president and chief executive officer, this is an unparalleled opportunity to reimagine and build new business models and innovation for one of Canada’s leading museums. The vice president, strategy and CFO will enhance existing revenue sources and conceptualize new earned revenue generating activities to ensure Glenbow’s sustainability and success.

As a valued member of the organization’s senior leadership team, the vice president, strategy and CFO will support the chair of the audit/investment committee of the board and strengthen cross-functional relationships, providing financial and operational insight, guidance, and counsel for Glenbow’s physical transformation. Glenbow will become a hub of innovation, creativity and collaboration, and the vice president, strategy and CFO has the opportunity to help lead this tremendous revitalization.

The successful candidate will have a minimum of five to 10 years of progressive experience in operational through to senior leadership roles in an organization or industry that has gone through significant change, including environments that have required ingenuity around business needs such as management and strategy consulting and startups. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in strategic forecasting, corporate development, and project management coupled with oversight of financial operations including budget, accounting, compliance and risk management. This leader will foster an environment of trust and collaboration among team members and possesses the ability to manage through change with flexibility and poise. They will come to the table with imagination around the business function and establish a course of action to operationalize and achieve the creative, strategic and business priorities of Glenbow.
