We serve diverse community needs through the Gray Family Eau Claire YMCA, Melcor YMCA at Crowfoot, Shawnessy YMCA, South Health Campus YMCA, Community YMCA, Saddletowne YMCA, Remington YMCA, and Camp Chief Hector YMCA. The YMCA also operates a stand-alone childcare centre in Quarry Park to serve 348 children… and we are only just getting started. In partnership with the City of Calgary, we will expand our impact operating new facilities Shane Homes YMCA in Rocky Ridge and Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton. These amazing new spaces will help us reach more people through our passionate volunteers, members, and staff.

Role: Theatre Technician (part-time)
Location: Brookfield Residential YMCA at Seton
Start Date: December 2018
Compensation: $19 – $22 per hour

What qualifications are we looking for?

At YMCA Calgary we strive to ensure our employees are a fit based on their strengths, interests, and future goals. The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Experience working as a theatre technician and/or related education in the field.
  • Experience with programming and operation of lighting consoles (element or similar).
  • Experience in live sound mixing.
  • Experience with digital sound processing and related equipment (Yamaha TF3 or similar) and analogue consoles (Soundcraft GB8 or similar).
  • Experience with AV equipment (Panasonic PTDz870 or similar).
  • Computer literacy in Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
  • Knowledge of safe rigging practices.
  • Experience working with and running crews.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Organizational and scheduling skills.
  • Working knowledge of Vectorworks is an asset.
  • Fall protection certification (YMCA will provide training opportunities for re-certification as/if needed).
  • Current Standard First Aid and AED certification required (YMCA will provide training opportunities for re-certification, as/if needed).
  • Evidence of a cleared police security clearance including a vulnerable sector search.
  • Three professional references required.

What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Reporting to the Technical Director, this position will be responsible for the effective operation of lighting, sound, video, rigging, set and stage management at the Seton YMCA Theatre. The technician will act as a primary liaison with clients for the duration of their rental period, and will be responsible for the technical components of rentals and special events in the theatre. The position will also be expected to be knowledgeable of and implement protocols and practices that support the appropriate use and care of the performance space, especially as it relates to safety practices, as well as care of the equipment and of the space itself.

The Theatre Technician will be working within a major recreational facility; work will occur primarily within and around the black box theatre, but may also occur within traditional office settings and throughout the department including the visual arts studios, fitness/dance studios, art gallery space(s), lobbies and occasionally outdoor locations. The work schedule is very flexible, with many evening and weekend hours required.

Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Oversees and operates House equipment (lighting, sound, AV, clearcom, other) for productions and events occurring in the theatre (both in-house and rentals).
  • Ensures and/or undertakes the safe and appropriate rigging of all equipment, including overhead (including but not limited to lighting, AV, sound gear, draperies, etc).
  • Supervises and assists with load in and strike, as required.
  • Supervises the event, ensuring the client and all workers, volunteers, patrons are operating safely and appropriately (per health and safety, fire regulations, and other protocols).
  • Undertakes the hanging, rigging, patching, testing, focusing, required for lighting, sound, AV, other event/production needs.
  • Provides design input for house hang, ensures/undertakes the restoration of the house to house hang position as required.
  • Troubleshoots and solves minor problems that may arise during technical rehearsals, set up, and performances.
  • Ensures spaces and equipment are being treated safely, and appropriately.
  • Effectively communicates in a variety of settings.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues to ensure the best delivery of customer/client experience, consistency in program offerings etc.
  • Be available to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.
