Summer Camp Artist In Residence

Live in the mountains and help youth belong, grow, thrive, and lead through artistic expression in the natural world.

Camp Chief Hector YMCA is the year-round overnight camping and outdoor environmental education branch of YMCA Calgary. The summer camp is located 75km west of Calgary on a 1,000-acre site in the Rocky Mountains. YMCA Camp Chief Hector is one of Canada’s premier summer overnight camps for children and youth ages seven to 17.

Reporting to the Camp Director, this position will be responsible for working with the full-time camping team to launch the Mountain Arts stream for campers attending two-week programs with a significant focus on four key visual arts mediums; drawing and sketching, painting, photography, and natural medium sculpture. The overriding focus of the of the Mountain Arts program is to develop a sense of belonging in the natural world and for campers to experience genuine growth in their skills and capacity for using the natural world as a vehicle for their artistic development.

The Artist in Residence will:

  • Be prepared to live in residence, on-site in rustic accommodation, for the duration of the contract.
  • Be responsible for documenting and assisting in the development of curriculum for campers in the Mountain Arts program.
  • Be responsible for proper budgeting and purchasing of materials and supplies for the Mountain Arts program.
  • Provide direction, support, and leadership for the summer camp staff teams working in the Mountain Arts program.
  • Build a community for campers and staff through committed, energetic leadership.
  • Facilitate high-value off-site trips and visits to enrich the Mountain Art program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director.

Salary: $15/hour
Contract Dates: May 4 – August 25, 2018
