Theatre Calgary

Theatre Calgary, southern Alberta’s largest and longest running professional theatre, celebrated 50 years in 2017-2018. Our vision is to stand amongst the best theatres globally as a leader in innovative, impactful and diverse programming. Our mission is to stimulate, provoke and delight through ambitious programming created to ignite local, national and international engagement. Theatre Calgary’s programming includes classical, contemporary and new plays from both the Canadian and international repertoire, including a wide array of genres and styles.

Annually, we present a mainstage subscription season that includes 5 plays in a 750 seat proscenium theatre (The Max Bell Theatre in Arts Commons) along with Shakespeare by the Bow (SBTB), our summer outdoor presentation featuring a company of Alberta emerging actors, and our annual holiday production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL (now in its 32nd year).

Theatre Calgary also develops new plays and adaptations as part of the previously named FUSE New Play Development Program (now called TC SCRIBES under TC EVOLVES). Our 2018-2019 season sees us venturing into developing new musicals with the World Premiere of MARY & MAX – a musical that Artistic Director Stafford Arima has been working on for 5 years. Since 2006, Theatre Calgary has premiered 12 new works developed through this program including LOST – A MEMOIR, LIBERATION DAYS, and BEYOND EDEN. In September 2017 we opened our 50th anniversary season with the premiere of Sharon Pollock’s BLOW WIND HIGH WATER, which had been commissioned and developed through FUSE. The last play to be developed under the FUSE banner, HONOUR BEAT by Tara Beagan, opened our 51st season.

Theatre Calgary hires an average of over 150 professional artists annually. Our audience is comprised of more than 120,000 patrons across 280 performances each year. Theatre Calgary brings the brightest Canadian talents from across Canada on to our stage, including Seana McKenna (THE AUDIENCE), Susan Gilmour (CRAZY FOR YOU), Ins Choi (KIM’S CONVENIENCE) and Morris Panych (THE SHOPLIFTERS).

In 2016, based on a bold artistic vision for the future, Theatre Calgary adopted a new strategic plan rooted in strengthening our connection to our community, advancing our artistic processes and programming, as well as expanding our presence and artistic creation beyond our borders. In spring 2017 we welcomed new Artistic Director, Stafford Arima, to lead our artistic programming in the years to come. In June 2018 we welcomed new Executive Director, Jon Jackson, to partner with Stafford in leading Theatre Calgary through a re-imagining of the current strategic plan under this new artistic and executive leadership.
