Ethnik Festival of Arts and Culture

Relive Black History Month with My City Speaks To Me

One of Alberta’s premier Black History Month celebrations, Ethnik Festival of Arts and Culture is a not-to-be-missed showcase of diverse cultural displays in an all-inclusive environment.

Taking place each February, this fantastic celebration took place shortly before lockdown and featured a stellar lineup of presenters and performers including Canadian R&B Queen Jully Black, actress Olunike Adeliyi, Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs Kaycee Madu, and Calgary’s own Chima Nkemdirim.

“This festival is open to all ethnicities regardless of work or creed or communities,” says Lanre Ajayi, Artistic Director Ethnik Festivals, in a statement. “We see it as an avenue to foster growth and development with a mutual understanding. Though we are many, we are connected by a purpose and a calling to be the best by serving one another.”

A showcase of Afro Canadian and Caribbean heritage, the schedule was rounded out by performances from local artists from Afro Canadian and Caribbean communities including Rondel Roberts, Rey Francis, Sasha Spronk, KTheChosen, Olasongstress, Adora Nwofor, Mel Vee, Bethel Afework, AlotOfPoetry, Priscila Bukasa, Syla Drum Circle, Woezo Theatre Company, Sabrina Naz, and the Sankofa Arts and Music Foundation.

Ajayi sees it as an avenue to foster growth and development with a mutual understanding. Though we are many, we are connected by a purpose and a calling to be the best by serving one another.

Relive the vibrancy of this growing and important festival with My City Speaks To Me.
