Calgary’s own smash up of art, science, and engineering returns with intriguing wonders

With a lineup of quirky and fun adventures, art, science, and engineering collide once again as Beakerhead takes over the city for the sixth consecutive year.

A spectacle of community engagement for all ages, this celebration brings sectors together to build, compete, and exhibit interactive works of art and entertainment.

“This unique event is a showcase of innovation and imagination through art, science, and engineering,” says Ricardo Miranda, Minister of Culture and Tourism for Alberta, in a statement. “It’s a great opportunity for Albertans and visitors alike to be inspired and totally entertained.”

This year features a bunch of new events to check out including Light up the Night with two 10-metre Tesla Coils built by a team of scientists, Lunch Without Light’s dining experience led by a famous broadcaster and a local neuroscientist, and much more.

With more than 50 distinct events (many of which are free), there’s something for everyone to explore. So what’s on our must-see list? Here are our picks for Beakerhead 2018:

Four to Six on Forth

Beakerhead teams up with Maker Faire Calgary to offer blocks of open-air experimentation in a family-friendly environment. Bring your co-workers and family to this new take on rush hour to experience the street as a laboratory.

Meet the Maker Tour

September 19, 2018, 6:00 – 8:00pm & 6:30 – 8:30pm
Meet at C-Square (Corner of 7th Ave. & 4th St. SE)

With so much to see spread out over the city, why not go on a tour with the Beakerhead crew? Here’s your chance to see half a dozen installations and meet the artists behind the creations.

The Locked Library

September 21, 2018, 7:00 – 10:00pm
Central Library (616 Macleod Tr. SE)

Prepare for an escape room experience on a massive scale with a science fiction theme. With three hours to puzzle through all six floors of the old Central Library, proceeds support the Calgary Public Library Foundation.

Spectral Illuminations III

September 21, 2018, 9:00 – 11:00pm
Memorial Park Library (1221 2nd St. SW)

Presented by EMMEDIA Gallery and Production Society in partnership with the Calgary Public Library, the historic Memorial Park Library comes alive with site-specific projections that alter the appearance of the surface they are projected on to. This is always a fantastic one-night-only show so make sure you swing by.
