Featuring 24 local, national, and international artists, warm up your February with the third edition of Block Heater.

This winter music extravaganza brings together a multi-faceted roots, blues, country, and indie program that injects a summer vibe into a bleak month. With performances from Justin Townes Earle, Iris Dement, Astral Swans, Raleigh, Harpoonist and the Axe Murderer, Deicha and the Vududes, and many more, you won’t want to miss this festival.

One of the offerings that caught our eye is a special screening of Sharon Lewis’ Brown Girl Begins, a post-apocalyptic film about a young black woman trapped in a world forced upon her. Ti-Jeanne, a reluctant priestess, must resurrect Caribbean spirits and survive the possession ritual that killed her mother or her people will die. The February 15 screening coincides with Black History Month and is followed by a performance by Yolanda Sargeant, Comrade, and AYE and Extraordinary Gentlemen.

Block Heater runs February 15 to 17, 2018 at venues throughout Calgary’s Music Mile. Head to calgaryfolkfest.com for full festival details.
