Back with its Canadian focused fall festival, join JazzYYC for a lineup of exciting collaborations, workshops, and all-ages events including a free jazz walk featuring local musicians.

Bringing some of Canada’s brightest jazz stars to Calgary for a celebration of music, the sixth annual festival from Calgary’s jazz collaborative includes a tribute performance from Jack Semple honouring B.B. King and so much more.

“This year we are excited to present our annual showcase featuring top Canadian talent with an exciting headliner show featuring blues guitar master Jack Semple paying tribute to his musical idol B.B. King,” says JazzYYC Artistic Producer Kodi Hutchinson in a statement. “We are so excited to feature a strong lineup of music that will appeal to jazz fans ranging from new listeners to veteran jazz fans with prices fitting any budget.”

There are even free workshops to check out that feature musicians providing training, tips, and ideas in improvisation, composing and arranging, and composing and performing.

With a such great lineup, it can be hard to choose. Here are our not-to-be-missed picks for this year’s festival:

Tevet Sela & John Roney

An intriguing concert for all who love innovative and exciting jazz, join Tevet Sela and John Roney for an evening of intelligent music. The evening features a skillful mix of jazz and classical harmonies with a Klezmer influence fusing North-African rhythm. Don’t miss it.

Ellen Doty

Ellen Doty is a soulful Canadian vocalist and songwriter with a world-class voice. Her music incorporates everything from jazz to soul, folk, pop, and indie music to make a sound that is uniquely hers. And with two shows, you have no excuse not to see her live at the King Eddy.

A Night of Seduction

All the way from Harlem in New York City, jazz-poet Quincy Troupe is joined by Calgary’s Poet Laureate Sheri-D Wilson for two late-night shows. Accompanied by musicians from Calgary’s popular Redline Trio and guests, this performance will be one for the record books.

This free, family-friendly event takes participants to various venues throughout Inglewood and the Music Mile. Featuring a guided tour of all the afternoon’s music with ArtWalk With Art, venues include the Central Library, Revival Brewcade, High Line Brewing, and the Cold Garden Beverage Company.

The Thrill Ain’t Gone

Jack Semple writes and performs modern blues without forgetting where he came from. Join this Canadian blues guitar master for a rare show paying tribute to one of his all-time idols, blues great B.B. King. Not only does it headline the festival, the concert features the award-winning Jack Semple Horns.
