Presented by the University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, Forms of Sound is full of incredible experimental music concerts and sound installations. A biennial event, this year’s lineup features performances, workshops, and installations by students, faculty, and alumni, as well as from visiting and local artists. So, what are we most looking forward to seeing? Here are our not-to-be-missed picks: Andromeda February 1, 2017, 8:00pm Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary (206 University Court NW) $9 – $12 The festival’s opening concert features Michael Horwood’s Andromeda performed by the UCalgary Wind Ensemble and will be very much worth checking out. Works from festival guest composers Anna Pidgorna and Analia Llugdar are also on the program. scpa.ucalgary.ca Catch Land’s End Ensemble’s all-Canadian program on February 3 | Image: Courtesy of Land’s End Ensemble New Voices, New Directions: Sacred Voices of the Golden Horn February 3, 2017, 8:00pm Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary (206 University Court NW) $15 – $20 Land’s End Ensemble kicks off its 20th anniversary season in celebration of Canada’s 150th with an all-Canadian program. The concert includes world premieres of new works by award-winning composers Analia Llugdar and Emilie LeBel, as well as Calgary composers Ilkim Tongur and George Fenwick. Guest soprano Laura Hynes is also on the bill and a pre-concert talk with host Allan Gordon Bell and the composers is slated for 7:15pm. landsendensemble.ca ensemble mosaik February 8, 2017, 8:00pm Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary (206 University Court NW) $18 – $25 Wrapping up the festival, catch renowned Berlin-based experimental musicians ensemble mosaik in a concert co-presented by New Works Calgary.
