A concert of classical chamber works exploring past traditions and future pathways spanning four centuries, Calgary’s own Impasto Duo presents Forward | Backward.

Join flautist Jiajia Li and pianist Elisabeth Desruisseaux, and friends Laura Reid, Jeff Faragher, James Musulak and Larry Smith, for an evening of extraordinary variety with compositions ranging from Baroque to modern and from classical to jazz.

The concert begins with composers whose ingenuity sparked new traditions in music including C.P.E Bach, Claude Vivier, and George Crumb. It also delves into unusual form structures from the Classical period, Expressionism, and fragmentation from 1970s Canada, and the voice of the whale from the Archeozoic to the Cenozoic.

Then, after the intermission, go back in time, with Jean Francaix’s Musique de cour, a twentieth-century take on aristocratic court music, and Claude Bolling’s Jazz Suite for Flute and Piano Trio, a crossover composition based on classic jazz styles.

Forward | Backward takes place at 7:30pm on February 19, 2017 at the Bella Concert Hall, Mount Royal University (4825 Mount Royal Gate SW). Admission by donation, suggested $20 per person.
