With the Calgary Stampede just around the corner, the free offerings for the week have a distinct western feel. But if bluegrass and pancakes aren’t your thing, why not hit up a graphic novel launch or an organ concert?

ProArts Presents Valerie Hall

Artist-Run Pancake Breakfast

An annual juried exhibition with the intended purpose of connecting artists to each other and to the greater community, celebrate the closing of Connections 2018 at the gallery’s annual artist-run pancake breakfast. Come by for pancakes, enjoy a live musical performance by Shona Rae and the Voodoo Hand, and take in a fantastic exhibition.

Stampede on 17th

Hosted by the 17th Ave Retail & Entertainment District BIA, swing on down to Tomkins Park for a pancake breakfast for the first 500 people alongside live music, dance performances, games plus much, much more. Try your luck with the mechanical bull or square dance with this Saturday’s special guests, Project Dance Calgary, and its all-day free open-air dance concert.

10-Minute Plays for Jane’s Walk – Summer Edition

Meet at the Horse Statue at 8th Ave. & Centre St.

After its successful turn at Jane’s Walk, these 10-minute plays return for the summer. With several performers reprising the work they created and performed this past May as well as two new performing groups, three plays are performed each day in succession along Stephen Avenue.

Movie Night in the Square

With live entertainment, food trucks, and a family-friendly western film, join the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions Committee for a screening of The Magnificent Seven. Swing by early as The Travelling Mabels perform ahead of the 7:00pm film. Guests are encouraged to bring their own chairs.

Fluor Rope Square

Hosted by the Calgary Stampede Downtown Attractions Committee, this piece of Stampede heaven is located right in the heart of downtown. Every day starts with a bacon pancake served hot off a chuckwagon or smokie and includes tons of free entertainment including the Fluor Great Western Flapjack Flip, Lammle’s World Champion Hat Stomp Competition, square dancing, horse drawn rig rides, and the First Nations Parade.
