Can you believe it’s July already? Neither can we! Stampede starts this week and there is a bevy of great free events to check out including:

Stephen Avenue Walk #IAMDOWNTOWN Summer Stage

It’s a short week for Downtown Calgary’s Summer Stage but you can still catch Wildflower, the Calgary Fiddlers and Crystal McGrath for free lunch hour performances.

Pop-Up Piano Series

This month the super cute, super awesome, Pop-Up Piano Series from Downtown Calgary expands to two days a week. First up this week is one of Calgary’s premier jazz pianists, Sheldon Zandboer, on the Woodlands Piano on Tuesday. Then on Thursday catch Andrea Petrity on the Wee Little Piano Book Exchange.

Circus Pop-Up Picinic

ProArts Presents World Music Vocal Concert

This week check out a concert  featuring Welsh-born soprano Laura Styler as well as  Argentina-born tenor Jorge Avilês. Each will perform works from their country of origin as well as other favourites from their vocal repertoire.

First Flip Pancake Breakfast

Calgary’s first pancake breakfast of the Stampede season takes place right on Stephen Avenue. Hosted by Downtown Calgary, Calgary Parking Authority, Tourism Calgary, and the Calgary Telus Convention Centre, they’ll be serving up flapjacks alongside Jacquie Drew and the Crew who will get your toes a tappin’. You can even flip a toonie to support the National Music Centre’s Guitar Club.

Blue on the Avenue featuring Y Brothers

Goodbye to Language (Adieu au Langage)

Join Esker Foundation for this free screening of award-winning film, Goodbye to Language. Jean-Luc Godard’s triumphant masterpiece follows a couple whose relationship breaks down along with the film’s imagery. It will be screened in its 2D version and is French with English subtitles.

Bike-In Cinema

Calgary Society of Independent Filmmakers and TRUCK Contemporary Art in Calgary have joined forces for this month’s Bike-In Cinema. The theme is science fiction and on the docket is the acclaimed animated short film Tarboz by Chad VanGaalen followed by the feature film, Beyond the Black Rainbow by Vancouver director Panos Cosmatos. Set in 1983, Beyond The Black Rainbow is feverish dreamscape inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons and features a score by the band Black Mountain.
