Multidisciplinary performances shine light on Calgary’s rising art stars

Full of exciting work from new voices, IGNITE! Festival of Emerging Artists returns with an incredible lineup dedicated to supporting, mentoring, and presenting emerging artists of all disciplines.

With different series featuring dance, improv, interdisciplinary, animation, site-specific, and theatre artists, IGNITE! allows artists to embrace risks in a supportive environment full of opportunities for collaboration and community building.

Hosted by Sage Theatre, the festival has become a must-see event for many in the community. And, for the first time, there’s even a day dedicated to workshops and panels where emerging and established artists can engage in dialogue about the arts profession between generations.

With a varied schedule and strong curated lineups, there’s a good chance you’ll find something to pique your fancy. Here’s what we’re hitting up:

Meanderings: A Site-Specific Performance Tour

June 6 – 10, 2017
Meet at the Pumphouse Theatre (2140 Pumphouse Ave. SW)

Head to Pumphouse Park for a night of thrilling outdoor performances as Swallow-a-Bicycle Theatre once again presents the site-specific series. Participating artists work in the Calgary community as arts administrators, dance teachers, violin players, and company-starters and include Joleen Ceraldi, Chelsea Dwarika, Sidney Knapp, Taylor Ritchie, Kris Teo, Jana Stevenson, and Emily Losier.

Double Bill

June 7 – 9, 2017
Victor Mitchell Theatre, Pumphouse Theatres (2140 Pumphouse Ave. SW)

Get a double dose of the theatre series with AJ Baragar and Erin Watson’s A Millennial’s Guide to Dating in the 21st Century followed by Samantha Ketsa and Emily Sunderland’s #JustGirlyThings.

IGNITE! Dance Series

June 7, 8 & 10, 2017
Victor Mitchell Theatre, Pumphouse Theatres (2140 Pumphouse Ave. SW)

Featuring work from Janelle Schiffner, Chantal Wall and Eric Osborne, Kyra Newton, and Alen Chaudhry, this is a great chance to check out new faces in Calgary’s dance community. Curated by Pam Tzeng, these four pieces explore identity, breathing, light, and personal demons.

Part of the club series, get ready for an outrageous one night stand of over-the-top sex pop flare. Full of new performative work, the festival takes over the whole bar of Venue 628 for this one-night-only, 18+ show.

IGNITE! Animation Series

Curated and co-presented by Quickdraw Animation, see an exciting and unique collection of shorts crafted using a range of techniques by emerging artists in Calgary’s own local animation studio.
