Fleeing war, moving to a new country and trying to get resettled is something most of us will never have to face. But for a number of new Calgarians, that is reality. It’s a tough go for anyone, especially children, and in that chaos, the little things that bring joy are often pushed aside.

On Saturday, June 11, Musicians 4 Refugees has partnered with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary to present the Kids 4 Kids fundraising concert. Featuring some of Calgary’s top young performers, this family-friendly concert and carnival will raise funds to provide extracurricular programming for refugee children in Calgary.

“Imagine not being able to experience of something as simple as an activity or a hobby,” says Erin MacLean-Berko, one of the organizers of Kids 4 Kids. “Imagine having a simple extracurricular activity be out of reach for your family—no soccer practice, no violin lessons, no choir. I truly believe that it is these things that provide children with a sense of self, and allow them to find their place in this world. Friendship, expression, support, and community come not just from a roof over their heads, but through music and play.”

Inspired by personal experiences, MacLean-Berko and Michael Coburn founded Musicians 4 Refugees to support the countless families who find themselves without a country to call home and uses musical and leadership skills to fundraise and support Syrian refugees.

Performers for the Kids 4 Kids concert include Calgary Girls’ Choir, Calgary Boys’ Choir, Amici String Ensemble, Arioso Children’s Choir, Mount Royal University’s Outreach Ensembles, magician Richard Young, and Kevin Chen, a piano prodigy from Mount Royal University’s Academy for Gifted Youth.

Kids 4 Kids takes place at 3:00pm on June 11, 2016 at Mount Royal University’s Bella Concert Hall (4825 Mount Royal Gate SW) and includes a carnival starting at 2:00pm. Tickets available online through tickets.mru.ca or at the door.
