Inspired by the life of Mary McCarthy Gomez Cueto, Lunchbox Theatre tells the unique story of a remarkable Canadian who lived in exile in her adopted homeland of Cuba.

Born in Newfoundland and living in Havana as a socialite and a singing teacher, Mary Fernández Álvarez sees her assets frozen as Fidel Castro comes to power. But everything changes when the unexpectedly impoverished widow meets aspiring singer Luis Rodríguez.

Through an original score of Cuban music, Newfoundland jigs, and heartwarming ballads, this new musical follows the evolving relationship of two people from very different worlds. A beautiful story, Newfoundland Mary explores the value of friendship during times of uncertainty and the possibility of love at a mature age.

Co-produced with Toronto’s Smile Theatre, Newfoundland Mary will also tour Calgary area seniors’ homes after its run at Lunchbox Theatre.

Newfoundland Mary runs April 24 to May 13, 2017 at Lunchbox Theatre (160, 115 9th Ave. SE).
