Bridging visual and performing art, Germany’s Volker Gerling brings a selection of his favourite flip books to life. See this unique work on the Theatre Junction GRAND stage at this year’s High Performance Rodeo.

In Portraits in Motion, Gerling reveals his flip book portraits by holding each one under a video camera and projecting it onto a large screen as he flips through their pages. Unexpected reactions occur as the images come to life alongside the heart-warming stories behind each encounter.

“Volker Gerling’s Portraits in Motion is one of those rare gems that awakens a sensitivity to the beauty of simple human encounters,” says Theatre Junction’s Artistic Director Mark Lawes, in a statement.

“Each year, Mark and I try to find that special work that we want to present together to our Calgary audience. We know our patrons like to step into the unknown, demand the best and like their theatre outside the box. We both agreed that Portraits in Motion is the show to capture their imagination,” says High Performance Rodeo’s Artistic Producer Ann Connors, in a statement.

Portraits in Motion runs January 18 to 21, 2017 at Theatre Junction GRAND (608 1st St. SW) and is part of the High Performance Rodeo, running January 5 to February 2, 2017.
