It was the trial of the century, but themes are still timely in tg STAN’s production

It was 1925 and the Scopes Trial was deemed the trial of the century—but the themes of fundamentalism versus modernism and religion versus science are still relevant today.

All the way from Belgium, tg STAN’s The Monkey Trial gets its Canadian premiere at Theatre Junction GRAND at a very timely moment in history.

“Through the literal transcription of the trial, tg STAN brings to life one of the most important court cases in American history and illuminates some of the critical questions we still face in our society today. What is the nature of truth? How do we embrace difference and express those differences in a public forum?” says Artistic Director Mark Lawes, in a statement.

The show is based on the transcription of what became known as the Scopes Monkey Trial where substitute high school biology teacher John Scopes was accused of violating Tennessee’s Butler Act. The act made it against the law to teach evolution in any state-funded school and the case became a boiling point in discussions about religion and science.

“The last time we performed The Monkey Trial was in 2010. Six years later the transcript of this famous trial finds a world that is even more cynical than before and a socio-political landscape that is harsher than ever,” says tg STAN’s Frank Vercruyssen, in a statement. “Therefore the brilliant speeches and wonderfully witty dialogues lost nothing of their urgency and the relevance of the text is rather terrifying.”

The Monkey Trial runs November 2 to 5, 2016 at Theatre Junction GRAND (608 1st St. SW). Tickets are on sale at or 403.205.2922.
