Theatre Calgary continues its 50th anniversary season with Twelfth Night. Separated in a shipwreck and forced to find their own way in a strange new land, Illyria holds much misadventure, love, and laughter for twins Viola and Sebastian. Originally presented at Canada’s National Arts Centre, this refreshing take on Shakespeare’s classic comedy is sure to have you rolling in the aisles. “Our design is all about the world onstage and the world offstage. You can see what’s happening in the play, but you can also see off into the wings, with the actors getting into costume or waiting for their entrances. It’s all about what’s on the outside, what we show to the world, and what we conceal,” says Old Trouts’ Judd Palmer, in a statement. “We’ve thought of the actors as ‘puppets’ and dressed them up like puppets, and made a set like a puppet set. Oh, and we’ve stuck a couple puppets in there too.” Twelfth Night runs January 30 to February 24, 2018 at the Max Bell Theatre, Arts Commons (240 9th Ave. SE). Tickets start at $35 and can be found at theatrecalgary.com.
