Many Mothers Collective
In 2020, our collective of Indigenous, immigrant, black and settler women, all of whom are mothers and grandmothers, came together to begin writing scripts, each representing our individual and shared concerns and life stories, in an atmosphere of mutual respect and appreciation. In 2023, we presented those scripts during theatre performances in Calgary at Heritage Park’s Opera House. Freehand Press chose to publish an anthology of our writings that same year.
We are now working with a documentary producer to propose the filming of a road trip to sites that resonate with our individual members including: sites in Western Canada where Black Americans settled after fleeing persecution in the south; the nations of two of our members, the Alexis Sioux Nakota nation in Alberta and the Peguis nation in Manitoba; the Congolese immigrant community of another member in Calgary and other places and causes that each of us holds dear.
Our hope is that in sharing our experience, we will encourage others to find ways of working together in the same atmosphere of appreciation and respect with a view to bettering the world for us all.
