April 22, 2016 Announcement of Calgary’s New Poet Laureate MEDIA ADVISORY Friday, April 22, 2016 Join us as we announce Calgary’s New Poet Laureate On Monday, April 25 at 9:30am, in conjunction with National Poetry Month and the Mayor’s Poetry City Challenge, Calgary’s new Poet Laureate will be announced. Outgoing laureate derek beaulieu will pass the title over to the new Poet Laureate who will hold the position for a two-year term from April 25, 2016 to March 31, 2018. Background On July 26, 2011, City Council approved a motion to establish a Calgary Poet Laureate position. The Poet Laureate serves as an artistic ambassador for Calgary, presenting at civic events and producing literary work that reflects our city and its citizens. Calgary’s first Poet Laureate was Kris Demeanor (2012 – 2014). The current Poet Laureate is derek beaulieu (2014 – 2016), whose term wraps up this Monday when Calgary’s new Poet Laureate is announced. Calgary Arts Development administers the Poet Laureate program in conjunction with a volunteer Selection Committee, who selects the Calgary Poet Laureate for a two-year term.
