May 5, 2021 Call for Assessor Nominations Calgary Arts Development seeks artists, arts workers, and community members to serve as peer assessors for our granting programs on an ongoing basis. Peer assessment committees are responsible for reviewing and evaluating grant applications and making funding recommendations to Calgary Arts Development. Each year we work with over 50 peer assessors in our programs. As a public funder, Calgary Arts Development stewards public funds for the benefit of all Calgarians. Peer assessors are fundamental to ensuring the investments we make are reflective of and relevant to the communities we serve. Assessment committees are made up of individuals from all backgrounds, artistic disciplines, and lived experiences. Previous experience assessing grant applications is not required! Assessors receive specific training and support from Calgary Arts Development staff for each program. We welcome nominations from all individuals who see themselves as members of Calgary’s arts community and arts sector. Calgary Arts Development provides an honorarium to assessors as a gift to recognize their time. The honorarium will be provided to assessors after the reviewing process is completed and honorarium rates depend on the program requirements. You may also submit a nomination form for someone else, however you must certify that the individual has agreed to be nominated. Role RequirementsMembership of each committee is designed to reflect and respect the broad diversity of Calgary and its artistic communities, including but not limited to: artistic discipline, gender, sexuality, age, religion, beliefs, nation, physical, neurological, and Mad identities etc. Peer assessment committees are expected to commit to Calgary Arts Development’s Group Agreements. Levels of commitment vary from program to program. Assessors will be expected to consider applications, meet with peers and Calgary Arts Development staff, and contribute to thoughtful conversations around the arts. Assessors are typically asked to commit to the below. Schedules are determined based on committee availability, and may include evenings, weekdays, and weekends. One information and training session (up to three hours). Four to six weeks to read and evaluate applications online. Up to four days of in-person assessment meetings (up to eight hours each day). You may nominate yourself or another individual. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIRED SKILLS Peers: Artists and arts professionals active in Calgary’s artistic communities with professional experience, skills, and knowledge directly relevant to the arts sector. Community Members: Individuals with an appreciation for the arts (any discipline) who actively attend arts performances and presentations. Community members should possess skills that are transferable to the non-profit arts sector, including, but not limited to: Non-profit board governance Organizational management Business planning and project management Marketing and communications Event production Investment and resource development Community and government relations Design or creation within the broader creative industries ADDITIONAL SKILLS Relevant skills, experience, and knowledge that will accommodate the range of applicants to be juried. A generous spirit, exceptional listening skills and a willingness and ability to embrace change, complexity and different viewpoints. An openness to productively and respectfully check in with bias. An understanding and awareness of Calgary and region, and an insight into our social and cultural climate. The respect of peers in the community.
