2021 Artist-Initiated Public Art Microgrant Recipients Calgary Arts Development has selected four projects to receive funding from our first Artist-Initiated Public Art Microgrant program. Calgary Arts Development invited Calgary and area artists, or artist teams, to submit ideas to create art in public spaces. Professional artists of all experience levels were encouraged to partner with community associations, businesses or private landowners to explore any form of public art in any part of the city. The total funding available for this program was $150,000. Funds for this program are provided through the Government of Alberta and The City of Calgary. We thank these funders for their generous support. Applications were reviewed by an independent selection committee, and the following projects were selected: Project Name: Filipinx Female Empowerment and Youth Murals Project Artist Name(s): FILIPINX KASAGANAAN Artist Collective: Gladzy Kie, Von Zuniga, and Allan Rosales Brief Project Description: The artists will create two murals that showcase Filipino community and culture on the themes of female empowerment Filipino youth. Location: Crescent Heights and Kensington. Location: Two mural locations in Crescent Heights and Kensington. Project Name: Westside Mural Project Artist Name(s): Mikhail Miller and Rachel Ziriada Brief Project Description: The Westside Mural project is a 24×80 ft mural in a highly industrialized area near the Bow River. The artists will work with Tsuut’ina Elders and Knowledge Keepers to identify plants that would have grown in the area to help inform their design, and work with Tsuut’ina youth on a mural painting workshop. Location: Sunalta. Project Name: Excavation: Unearthing the Story and History of a Space Artist Name(s): Colleen Rauscher (lead), Jenny Tzanakos, Ramsey Kunkel, Lucy Altrows Brief Project Description: The artists will hold a photography exhibition in the Sparrow Artspace, along with interactive public events and programs. Location: Bridgeland and Crescent Heights. Project Name: Mural for Horizon Housing Artist Name(s): Nicole Wolf Brief Project Description: Large-scale public mural on the side of an affordable housing residence, inspired by the stories of the persons living in it Location: Northwest Calgary.
