The Project
Update as of June 11: Good news! After a brief delay, all banners are now installed.

Artist Statement
When I was a kid, time moved slowly, colours were more saturated, and there was this magical quality that lingered in the air. Painting can be a portal for me to go back to that space, where I’m just lost in colouring, daydreaming and having fun. These paintings are a mix of happy hometown memories and mysterious childhood daydreams of subconscious origins.
About the Artist
Michelle Ku is a visual artist, muralist and animation filmmaker based in Mohkinsstsis/Calgary. Mainly working with acrylic paint and traditional materials, she’s inspired by the mind-body-spirit connection and childhood memories. Michelle’s paintings often balance serious subject matter with cute, silly characters and playful colour schemes. As part of the National Film Board’s Hothouse program, Michelle directed the shorthand-painted animation Unblending. She’s worked with Cartoon Network, Magic the Gathering and FX, and studied Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins. Michelle’s work has been supported by grants from the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and Calgary Arts Development.

The Centre City Banner Program:
The Centre City Banner Program engages local artists to create artwork for banners displayed on light poles and bridges leading into the core, acting as gateways to Calgary’s downtown and cultural district.
