The Project

The East Calgary International Avenue (ECIA) Public Art Project is a community-informed initiative focused on capturing and sharing stories of one of Calgary’s most culturally diverse areas. While the neighbourhood’s rich mix of cultures is reflected in local businesses, schools and everyday life, many grassroots histories have not been formally documented or commemorated.
A call for artists was posted in February 2026 and submissions are being reviewed. The selected artists will gather and document stories from current and former residents from the ECIA region, which includes Albert Park/Radisson Heights, Applewood Park, Dover, Erin Woods, Forest Heights, Forest Lawn, Penbrooke Meadows, Red Carpet, Southview, 09Q and a portion of Golden Triangle. These lived experiences will inform the design and installation of two permanent public artworks rooted in community relationships and place.
This is a new, one-time public art opportunity funded by The City of Calgary’s Local Area Planning department (separate from the one per cent for Public Art program). The project will result in two permanent public artworks that will be accessioned into the City of Calgary’s Public Art Collection and maintained over the long term.
Calgary Arts Development is delivering this project on behalf of the Local Area Investment Fund (LAIF), in partnership with The City of Calgary’s Arts & Culture and Planning teams. The project highlights how public art can support cultural memory, strengthen community connections and create meaningful shared spaces.
What’s happening next
We are currently in the process of reviewing applications and selecting artists for this project. An assessment committee, made up of members selected through community nominations and staff expertise, is leading this process. The committee is designed to reflect the broad diversity of Calgary and its artistic communities, with a particular emphasis on representation from the ECIA community.
Shortlisted artists will be invited to participate in interviews, with final selections to be announced in the coming months. Two artists or artist teams will be selected to work in the East Calgary International Avenue (ECIA), engaging with local communities to help inform artworks that reflect underrepresented stories and histories of the area.
This page will be updated once artists are selected and as new information becomes available.
