Artist Selected for Northeast LRT Public Art Project
We are pleased to announce that Calgary-based artist Sumer Singh will lead the public art component of the Northeast LRT Extension project. Singh brings a multidisciplinary background as an artist, engineer and architect, with a practice that bridges ancestral craft and emerging technology.
Rooted in a 500-year family history of blacksmiths, poets and artisans, his work explores cultural memory through material, structure and light. Working across scales — from personal objects to large-scale public artworks — Singh’s practice brings together technical rigour and hands-on experimentation to shape collective human experience.
Through this project, Singh will develop a site-responsive artwork for the new station plaza at 60 Street and 88 Avenue NE. The artwork will be integrated into the design of the space, responding to the surrounding communities and the experience of future transit users.
Singh was selected through an open, competitive process that received 102 eligible applications from across Canada and internationally. A shortlist of four artists was invited to interview, with the final recommendation made by an assessment committee of artists, arts professionals and technical experts.
The project is currently in the design phase. Working in collaboration with Calgary Arts Development and The City of Calgary project team, Singh is developing a concept informed by site research, technical requirements and community context.
