New Chinatown Public Art Plan reflects community vision

The Chinatown Public Art Plan launched on May 21, 2026 with a celebration for all those involved in creating it. The plan is a community-informed roadmap that outlines a long-term vision for public art in Calgary’s Chinatown.

Developed by Calgary Arts Development, it is the first neighbourhood-specific public art plan for Chinatown and responds to strong community interest in shaping how public art reflects cultural identity, strengthens belonging and supports long-term vitality.  Developed over 18 months through surveys, interviews, focus sessions and community engagement events, the plan outlines a long-term vision for public art in Calgary’s Chinatown. More than 1,300 participants, including artists, residents, business owners and community members, helped shape the plan’s themes, values and priorities.

“Knowing how public art can strengthen identity, build a sense of belonging and enrich community life, it’s my pleasure to welcome you to this new resource and long-term vision for public art in Chinatown.”

— Patti Pon, President and CEO, Calgary Arts Development

The plan identifies opportunities for future public art that celebrate cultural identity and heritage, strengthen community connection, support youth engagement and create space for contemporary artistic expression in Chinatown.
