Decolonizing Spaces with Creativity Webinar
This webinar provides confidence in promoting inclusion and belonging in spaces, confidence in understanding what decolonizing looks like in practice, and confidence in moving towards meaningful reconciliation and relationship building from a place of understanding oneself.
Topics
This webinar is for those who want to:
- Develop protocols around cultivating safe spaces.
- Understand themselves and lead with love.
- Be patient with multiple perspectives.
- Move into reflection rather than reaction.
- Cultivate a safe space for themselves, community, participants, audience and team.
- Develop awareness regarding the impact of trauma on the body and brain.
- Differentiate between colonial and decolonial ways of thinking/feeling/doing.
- Make decisions that connect to self, family, community and land.
Creativity
Supporting the content of the webinar will also be creative prompts because:
- Creativity is curious.
- Creativity disrupts the status quo.
- Creativity provides our bodies with a pause to process.
- Creativity allows us to move into the most innovative and empathetic places in our brains.
- Creativity allows us to express what we might have difficulty expressing verbally.
These creative prompts will be an invitation. You can opt in, not, or out.

Framework
The content framework has been developed and shared in the Cultivating Safe Spaces (CSS) program (visit cultivatingsafespaces.com) by Elaine Alec who is a storyteller and facilitator from the Syilx and Secwepemc Nations. Elaine is CEO of Naqsmist (nux-meest), which translates into “many coming together as one,” and is the author of “Calling My Spirit Back.”
Facilitation
The webinar is facilitated by Geraldine Ysselstein who is a trained Cultivating Safe Spaces (CSS) facilitator. She was born on the land of her ancestors, which is the Netherlands, is a settler on Turtle Island and a Treaty 7 guest in Mohkinsstsis (Calgary). She has a lifetime of experiences working/volunteering/participating in the arts as an arts manager, arts management/leadership educator, artist/creative, arts professional collaborator and arts audience member.
