Melisa Centofanti

I am a Calgary/Mohkinstsis art-ivist (visual artist and activist) working on themes of food with a social/environmental justice lens. As an inclusive feminist I use the domestic work of cooking in my kitchen as a catalyst for research, investigations, and art practice. The intention in the work I create is to lead the audience in the direction of supporting local/urban farmers, and cooking from scratch as a subtle act of rebellion against factory farming and corporate, processed food. Both of which are damaging to our health, damaging to soil and are energy intensive. This art is presented in public and community spaces where the activities become a catalyst for community building and nudges towards a healthier, connected community.

In my art practice, the goal is to create work for social change and dive deeper into this process. I believe we have the power to improve our consumerist habits and create a more just world through food.

Since 2017 part of my practice has been as a member of 2Peaz Artist Collective, we continue our work together on a regular basis. We have two selected mixed media works in the upcoming North Central BRT shelter program.
