The Badlands Amphitheatre is looking for wardrobe stitchers and costumers for their 2025 production of The Canadian Badlands Passion Play in Drumheller, AB. The Canadian Badlands Passion Play tells an epic story of faith, hope & love based on the life of Christ. It is performed on Canada’s largest outdoor stage, with a company formed of professional and semi-professional actors (supplemented by volunteer actors), working with a professional crew.

Job Description

Costumers work with the Costume Designer to serve as a Cutter, Stitcher, general Costumer or Dresser as required. They also act as wardrobe crew during the run of the performances assisting with presets, repairs, quick changes, cleaning and storing various costume pieces.

Duties:

  • Sewing new costumes or assembling costumes from general stock, under the direction of Costume Designer and Head of Department.
  • Pulling or storing costumes as required.
  • Instructing actors on the proper wearing of their costumes and removal of modern accessories (sunglasses, Fitbits, wedding rings, etc.).
  • Assisting with construction, alteration, and repair of costume stock (including gluing, sewing, and repairing shoes).
  • Assisting with costume presets, dressing, and quick-changes during Dress Rehearsals and Performances (in collaboration with Head of Department and Stage Management).
  • Liaising with performers to resolve any difficulties or issues that arise once costumes are distributed.
  • Assisting with show laundry each night as required.
  • Assisting with the end of season strike and winter storage of costumes.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Previous sewing experience is required. The ideal candidate is confident in their sewing abilities and can take on basic sewing tasks (hemming, cutting fabric, building simple garments, threading machines, simple repairs etc) without requiring supervision.
  • Previous theatre costuming experience is a huge asset.
  • Good interpersonal skills. The wardrobe team works closely with the other departments as well as our cast.
  • Comfortable working in a fast paced environment, with changing challenges requiring adaptive problem solving.
  • Able to work with deadlines and manage their time and to-do lists to meet those deadlines.
  • Comfortable working with a team as well as independently.

Important Information:

  • This is a contract position from May 27 – July 26
  • The amphitheater is an outdoor venue. We rehearse and perform in all kinds of weather, and on all kinds of terrain. While the wardrobe team does most of their work indoors, they will be working outside during the performances as well as a few rehearsals as required.
  • The work week is six (6) days long with Tuesdays off, hours vary from day to day. During performances the work week shifts to three (3) days on and four (4) days off.
  • Compensation is a contract amount starting at $6000
