Workshop: Intro to Reduction Linocut

Instructor: Jonathan Creese
Location: A/P Studio
Date/Time: Tuesdays, January 21, 28, February 4 and 11, 2025 from 6 – 9pm
Cost: $285

This intro class to the reduction linocut technique will teach the basics of the process through the creation of a three-layer reduction woodcut at the Alberta Printmakers studio over the course of four evening classes.

The reduction process is one way of introducing colour into the relief printing process without the necessity of having multiple blocks. Students will be instructed on ways of designing imagery for reduction printing, useful approaches to the carving process, the use of a registration jig, and finally the setting of the press and printing.

Participants should leave the workshop with a small edition of reduction prints designed and printed by themselves as well as a good foundation in the technique to allow them to continue with their own personal explorations.

What you’ll learn:

  • What should be considered when designing an image for the reduction process
  • How to transfer the image to the block
  • The basics of carving linoleum
  • How to achieve accurate registration for multiple layers of colour
  • The printing process
