(Calgary AB) – Today, Calgary Arts Development released the first-ever demographic profile of the non-profit organizations they fund. The report is based on a 2017 Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) survey of 161 non-profit arts organizations who receive annual operating grant investments from Calgary Arts Development. The survey focused on the demographics of the arts sector, including artists, administrators, and volunteers.
“Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are core values at Calgary Arts Development,” says President & CEO Patti Pon. “Through the EDI survey results, we have gained a better understanding of the demographic profile of our arts sector, including where there are gaps when it comes to encouraging equitable and diverse workplaces.”
The report highlights several key findings, including:
- The arts sector is less ethnically diverse than the population of Calgary with representation of visible minorities in the sector less than half the representation of visible minorities in Calgary.
- Individuals identifying as Deaf/deaf or hard of hearing, with a disability and/or with a mental illness show lower rates of representation in the arts sector compared to local or national statistics.
- Gender, age, and ethnicity all show relationships to levels and sources of income.
The findings serve as a call to action for organizations receiving operating grant investments from Calgary Arts Development to move to a state of greater equity for under-represented groups through more inclusive practices. There is a gap to close if the non-profit sector is truly to represent our city’s overall population.
