Art 4 Hearts
The deadline for this opportunity has passed.
Leighton Art Centre has just launched a new campaign to allow local artists of all ages to share some beauty, hope, and joy with Calgary- and Foothills-area seniors who are currently isolated due to COVID-19.
The Leighton Art Centre needs your help in spreading some beauty, hope, and joy!
One lesser-known toll of the current COVID-19 pandemic is that many of our senior friends are finding themselves isolated in their residences.
Local senior centres and their residents have visited the LAC and supported our artist members for many years, and we would love to give back to them during this time of social distancing.
We are asking our artist community (of all ages) to send original art cards, together with messages of hope and love, which we will deliver to seniors’ communities across Calgary and the Foothills region. Our first goal is to acquire 235 original art cards (which will supply a card to each resident of two of Calgary’s United Active Living Communities Seniors’ Homes) by May 8, 2020. If the program proves to be popular, extra cards will be distributed to other local assisted living facilities, hospices, and seniors’ centres with whom we’ve connected.
Please note that all items will be properly quarantined by the centres’ programmers before being distributed.
In these unprecedented times, artists and their skills are needed more than ever to connect, uplift, and inspire! We hope that our amazing community will embrace this opportunity to show our friends in need that we are here for them. Original works of art not only provide something special to cherish but will serve as a reminder that although we are apart… we are all in this together.
Here’s How You Can Participate in Art 4 Hearts
Create a small piece of original art in any medium on a postcard size piece of paper. We ask that works are no larger than 6” x 8”, and fit in an envelope. Use whatever paper you have on hand, just remember it must be able to handle your medium (card stock or watercolour paper work great!).
Embrace creativity and positivity! We encourage you to make your art uplifting, thoughtful, and heartfelt. The goal is for your art to brighten someone’s day! Need some inspiration? You are welcome to use our all-ages project tutorials—links are further down this page.
Include a written message of hope and positivity on the backside of your card. Please write your message by hand and use large, legible print. At a loss for words? Check out the watercolour wildflowers project tutorial for ideas! You may also include a small statement about your painting or include your artist information, (ie. website, artist bio or statement).
Please keep the subject and message non-denominational.
Take a photo so you can share your contribution digitally too! We love seeing photos of your art, and it really helps promote our cause. Tag us @leightonartcentre (Facebook/Instagram) or @leightoncentre (Twitter) and use the hashtag #Art4HeartsLAC.
Mail your completed artwork in an envelope to:
Leighton Art Centre

Foothills AB T1S 0Y4
Mail must be received by May 8, 2020, to be included. Drop-offs will not be accepted. Please note that it takes approximately three business days for mail to arrive at the LAC from Calgary & area.
You are welcome to email info@leightoncentre.org to inform us that you have sent a piece; if you do, we’ll let you know when it has arrived.
Thank you for helping us shine some light into these seniors’ days!
