Introduction to Linocut

Participant Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate

All beginner techniques necessary to draw, carve and print a linocut will be covered and demonstrated in this class. Hand printing on thin Japanese paper and printing with the press on thick rag paper will be demonstrated. (For students with some experience, additional techniques for carving and tips for multicolour printing will be shared if desired. Experienced students can come to this course with a personal project on which they would like guidance from the instructor in order to complete it.)

Intro to Linocut will cover:

  • Focus on different carving tools and the marks they make.
  • Transferring a drawing onto linoleum.
  • Even inking of block; including gradient colour.
  • Hand printing on thin paper.
  • Printing with etching press.

Instructor Bio

Eveline Kolijn is a printmaker and installation artist living and working in Calgary. She received an MA in cultural anthropology from the Leiden University in the Netherlands in 1986 and a BFA from the Alberta College of Art + Design in 2008 including the Governor General’s Award for academic achievement. She has participated in national and international exhibitions and residencies, public art projects and community engagement. She has been published in various scientific publications. She is an instructor at the Alberta University of the Arts School of Continuing Education. In 2018, she joined the Energy Futures Lab as a Fellow and in 2019, she received the AUArts Alumni Legacy award.
