Antyx Community Arts is a Calgary based non-profit organization that engages youth through the arts so they can develop new skills and confidence and use their creativity to make a positive difference in their communities. We are passionate about supporting youth to be successful and developing young leaders through creative learning and artistic expression.

We are energetic, youthful, curious, cross-cultural and community-focused and are looking for a new executive director who shares our values and will bring a fresh perspective and diverse experience to our team.

Job Description

The executive director (ED) is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization according to the strategic direction set by the board of directors. This is the most senior position, reporting directly to the non-profit board of directors of Antyx Community Arts Society.

Primary Duties

Leadership

  • Ensure that the values of the organization are upheld and honoured in carrying out the organization’s mission and vision.
  • Act as the spokesperson for Antyx in the Calgary community.
  • Liaise with board of directors regarding organizational management and community programs and progress.
  • Participate with the board in developing a vision and strategic plan to guide the organization.
  • Develop an operational plan incorporating goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization and provide leadership to ensure alignment of staff to that plan.
  • Act as a professional advisor to the board on all aspects of the organizations’ activities.
  • Foster effective teamwork between the board and the ED and staff.

Financial Planning and Fundraising

  • Develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies and relationships (cultivation, solicitation and stewardship) with the assistance of the board to meet budget objectives.
  • Research funding sources, write funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization, and otherwise support the implementation of the organization’s sustainable fund development plan.
  • Work with staff and board to prepare a comprehensive budget and prepare a three to five year financial plan that aligns with the organization’s business plan.
  • Manage the annual budget in line with the fundraising goal and board approval.
  • Work closely at year end with accounting and auditor to ensure financial compliance according to CRA rules for nonprofit organizations.

Organizational Planning

  • Support, as an ex-officio member, all Board committees and their action plans.
  • Draft policies for the approval of the Board and provide support to the board by preparing supporting materials for Board meetings.
  • Ensure the operation of the organization meets with expectations of the youth it serves, board and funders and that it is compliant with the established policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Respond or otherwise to tend to calls, emails, mail and community inquiries.

Program Planning

  • Ensure the programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organizations’ mission and reflect the priorities of the organization.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services including regular review and updating of program theory of change and logic model.
  • Ensure Antyx program activities are informed by an understanding of community arts, youth engagement and community development practice.
  • Develop new initiatives to support the strategic direction of the company.
  • Develop effective partnerships and collaborative initiatives.

People and Culture

  • Manage the compensation package for required staff within the overall budget.
  • Determine the staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery.
  • Hire and train staff, ensure staff receive appropriate training, and manage and schedule staff across a range of community commitments.
  • Recruit and train volunteers, ensure volunteers receive appropriate training, and schedule volunteers to support programs and events as needed.
  • Provide clear objectives to direct reports and hold them accountable to those objectives.
  • Assessing performance of staff and volunteers, develop necessary succession plans and foster professional development.
  • Stay current with trends and changes in the non-profit sector and the community arts area.
  • Ensure overall effective delegation and management.

Community Relations/Advocacy

  • Communicate with stakeholders to keep them informed of the work of Antyx and to identify indicators of the impact of Antyx in the community and communicate such impact.
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and others to help achieve the goals of Antyx.

Risk Management

  • Identify and evaluate the risks to the organization and ensure proper policies, procedures and other measures are in place to mitigate risk in accordance with current non-profit sector best practices.

Education, Experience & Qualities We Are Looking For

  • Proven track record with previous non-profit and the ability to successfully raise funds, make presentations, direct mail activities, and prepare foundation requests.
  • Financial and business acumen.
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to take initiative and accomplish tasks; ability to act independently and take direction.
  • An undergraduate or post-graduate degree in a related field.
  • A good understanding of community arts and community arts practices.
  • Experience working with youth and understanding of youth engagement and social emotional learning.
  • At least three to five years of progressive management experience in a voluntary sector organization.
  • Strong communication skills, with experience in leadership and advocacy roles.
  • Successful grant-writing, reporting and outcome measurement.
  • Experience in developing and implementing a business plan that is aligned with an organization’s strategic plan.
  • Experience reporting directly to a board of directors, or at minimum, working knowledge of non-profit board and executive communications and operations.

Pre-employment requirement: Successful candidate must clear Police Check including Vulnerable Sector Check.

This is a full-time permanent position, 35-hour work week. Some evening and weekend work is required to accommodate activities such as executive committee and board meetings and representing the society at public events.
