Art Handler
Heffel, Canada’s national fine art auction house, is looking to fill a part-time art handler position at the Calgary office. The position will be responsible for fine art shipping and installation, gallery logistics and related administrative support.
Duties and Responsibilities
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
- Fine art packing and shipping; following corporate policies and maintaining shipping records.
- Liaise and coordinate with third-party shipping companies for packing, crating and shipping services.
- Fine art exhibition preparation and gallery installation; using proper care and knowledge when handling artwork.
- Assist with framing, including frame repair, wiring, backing and hardware correction.
- Pick-up and delivery of artwork.
- Receive and unpack works as they are brought into the gallery.
- Store artwork safely and maintain artwork storage inventories, ensuring clear labelling and record keeping.
- General gallery maintenance, ensuring work spaces are organized and well-stocked.
- Assist with artwork collection, labeling, cataloguing and condition reporting, as required.
- Arrange third-party reframing and conservation, as required.
- Provide administrative support to Heffel’s national team, including data entry and photo editing as needed.
Qualifications and Skills:
- The successful applicant must hold a valid Alberta driver’s license.
- Previous experience in a related field including experience handling cultural artifacts and artwork in a safe, respectful and archival manner considered an asset but not required.
- Post-secondary degree or diploma in a related field preferred, but not mandatory.
- An understanding of the practice and techniques used for handling, installing and shipping works of art.
- High level of discretion in dealing with confidential information.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritize tasks and multi-task.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with other team members and offices to accomplish company-wide and departmental goals.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and tight deadline driven business.
- Carpentry skills an asset, but not required.
- Experience with Adobe products, including Photoshop considered an asset, but not required.
- Strong interest and enthusiasm in visual arts, culture and the auction industry.
