Allied is known for the adaptive re-use of light industrial structures, typically featuring high ceilings, natural light, greenery, exposed structural frames and interior brick. As part of our Make Room for the Arts program, Allied works with artists to integrate art and cultural experiences into our buildings and the surrounding public realm, creating value for artists, our users and overall community.

The Opportunity: The Alberta Hotel

The Alberta Hotel, originally built in 1888-90, is a sandstone retail and commercial building within the Stephen Avenue National Historic District of downtown Calgary. The three storey, ltalianate-style, landmark building occupies a corner location at one of downtown’s busiest intersections. The building also incorporates a 1906 classical revival-style annex and 1891 rear addition. The earliest part of the building is distinguished by its rock-faced exterior, round headed windows and ornamental metal cornice, while the annex is defined by a smooth-finished, ashlar facade.

Project Scope

Allied is committed to support arts and culture throughout the communities where we operate. To increase the presence of arts and culture at the Alberta Hotel, we are looking to feature art in the street-level windows on 8th Avenue (Stephen Ave.) and 1st Street.

The windows are within a retail space that is currently for lease, and as a result the length of time for the artwork to be exhibited must be flexible.

We would like to feature art in all the at-grade windows of the building. This can include wrapping art on the entire window or a separate structure to be placed inside the window. The art does not have to be an original production. Allied is open to any recommendations for art type and installation method given the size and context of the request. The selected artist will be given the opportunity to present their own ideas for how to utilize this space and meet the project goals.

Budget: Maximum budget is $8,000
