Over the past two months, Anna has been in residence at KOAC, using the studio to explore sculptural interpretations of architectural arches. Her work considers the symbolic and structural roles of arches—as thresholds, as connectors, and as conduits for meaning.
“Arches, as architectural elements, are historically seen in windows, doors, tunnels, bridges—entrances and exits. They both connect and distinguish space, allowing one to cross over or pass through. Structurally, the arch seems to follow both logic and intuition, and my work aims to consider this overlap.” – Anna Semenoff
During the artist talk, Anna will speak about the concepts informing her practice, including:
- The influence of modern architecture on perception,
- The tensions between technological advancement and intuitive understanding, and how evolving structures shape our relationship to reality and meaning.
- She reflects on how the lightness and clarity of modern architecture—often conveyed through glass—is structurally supported by hidden forces like reinforced concrete. This duality prompts broader questions.
Anna writes, “In my work, I consider ways in which technological evolutions enhance, and diminish our relationship with the world. Is it possible that the appearance of reality no longer lines up with an intuitive understanding of it? With a general and cultural assumption that anything is technologically possible, where does meaning come from?”
Join us for an afternoon of thoughtful conversation and a chance to view Anna’s sculptural works in person.
